Language Immersion

Surrounding yourself with words and sounds and music is definitely the very best way to learn any language. We are looking into courses abroad at the moment and will soon be able to recommend one or two.

Until then, feel free to do your best to immerse yourself where you live, using the following suggestions… for example, use a dictionary to print words like “table”, "door", "window", "kettle", "bed", "chair", "mirror" etc and stick them onto those items around the house. Over time these words will automatically become part of your vocabulary, without even trying to memorize them! You could also in time join some verbs, like eat, open/close, wash, boil, sleep, sit, look, etc so as to associate them with the objects. Try it!

Internet freebies: Immerse yourself right away by...

~Listening to the radio abit each day and tune in your ears!

~Keeping up with the news each day!

~Looking up the weather (at least in Egypt) each day!

~Keeping up with Arabic media (tv programs, movies, etc)!

~Using www.google.com/intl/ar/ instead of Google in English and set your results criteria to languages in Arabic…

~Listening to music and looking for the lyrics to your favorite songs! For example here is a song by Hasnaa, called Bamba.

Culture Corner

Cultural Quirks: While many in the Arab world are Muslims it is not correct to assume that they are so. Traditional clothing varies across different societies and also is influenced by the degree of religiousness to which the person adheres. When a woman choses to wear a robe and veil to cover their faces and bodies it is due to their level of devotion and not due to their being suppressed. It is not uncommon for Arabs to mix traditional clothing with western clothing. Depending on how religious a certain woman is, or her family, it may be best not to offer your hand unless she offers her first.

Again, depending on the religion and degree of devotion, meat must usually have been butchered in line with a certain ritual and thus "Hallal", meaning "Permitted". Of course, this would not include Pork. It is good manners to accept what is offered to you as a guest, and to use only your right hand when offering or accepting food and drink, or when eating from a communal dish.

National Dishes and recipes: Pita bread is typically used... it being a flat bread which can be opened and filled with meat or vegetables to make a delicious meal. Baklawa or Baklava is a well-known dessert of layered pastry jam-packed with nuts and flavored in honey-lemon syrup. They are usually in diamond shapes. Houmous is a delicious puree of chickpeas with tahini, garlic and olive oil - used as a dip for Pita bread or a condiment. There are many more tasty dishes but for anyone desiring to dive in, we recommend Arabic Cooking Step By Step (1/1 Volume) as a heavy duty recipe for ones who are intent on mastering the art of middle eastern cuisine.
