The modern tongue spoken by upwards of 200 million native speakers and an estimated 245 million non-native speakers, comes in many different varieties around the world... gnerally the language can be termed as either literary, or colloquial. Different from the standard nature of the Literary language, colloquial Arabic can be quite varied or even classified into different dialects altogether. This being the case, standard Arabic is a safe bet if you are interested in learning this language, as it is widely studied and used internatinally.
This language has contributed to the vocabulary of many other languages, including English, as the list above mentioned afew loanwords. Some of the other languages affected have been Berber, Hindustani, Indonesian, Kirubi, Kurdish, Malay, Maltese, Pashto, Persian, Portugese, Spanish, Swahili, Turkish, Urdu.

Cultural Quirks: While many in the Arab world are Muslims it is not correct to assume that they are so. Traditional clothing varies across different societies and also is influenced by the degree of religiousness to which the person adheres. When a woman choses to wear a robe and veil to cover their faces and bodies it is due to their level of devotion and not due to their being suppressed. It is not uncommon for Arabs to mix traditional clothing with western clothing. Depending on how religious a certain woman is, or her family, it may be best not to offer your hand unless she offers her first.
Again, depending on the religion and degree of devotion, meat must usually have been butchered in line with a certain ritual and thus "Hallal", meaning "Permitted". Of course, this would not include Pork. It is good manners to accept what is offered to you as a guest, and to use only your right hand when offering or accepting food and drink, or when eating from a communal dish.
National Dishes and recipes:Pita bread is typically used... it being a flat bread which can be opened and filled with meat or vegetables to make a delicious meal. Baklawa or Baklava is a well-known dessert of layered pastry jam-packed with nuts and flavored in honey-lemon syrup. They are usually in diamond shapes. Houmous is a delicious puree of chickpeas with tahini, garlic and olive oil - used as a dip for Pita bread or a condiment. There are many more tasty dishes but for anyone desiring to dive in, we recommend Arabic Cooking Step By Step (1/1 Volume) as a heavy duty recipe for ones who are intent on mastering the art of middle eastern cuisine.
