This site provides a great guide to the many measure words in the Chinese language. We have some in English for example, 3 "cups" of tea; 2 "bars" of soap; 1 "piece" of paper; etc. However we can also speak of many words without using measure words for example, 3 cats; 2 people; 1 car; etc. That is not the case in Chinese though, so although it seems daunting, one must at some point try to learn/memorize the appropriate measure words for their respective nouns. The site we've referred you to will surely be useful in this.
