Whereas people used to learn a language using more traditional methods such as exercise books and tapes, more and more people are now learning a language on their PC or laptop. The benefits are numerous: whereas other learning methods focus mostly on one aspect of communication, good language learning software combines all four aspects of learning a language: speaking, listening, reading and writing. The best courses are very interactive, which is conducive to learning. The more we stimulate our brain during the learning process, the more we retain new information.
All the courses recommended below have a "Good for" section where we explain who and what the product is good for.

The most comprehensive language learning software available for 30 languages. Although Rosetta Stone is a significant investment, we feel that if you're serious about learning a language, Rosetta is an excellent choice. However if you're just interested in learing a few key phrases for travel or fun, then 102 Languages or BYKI (featured below) are more cost effective and perhaps a better choice.
Serious language learners: Rosetta Stone language courses are extremely comprehensive. The full set of one of their courses provides anywhere between 300 and 600 hours worth of lessons. They cover all aspects of language learning: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Rosetta Stone might seem expensive, but in the long run, if you make the most of them, they're extremely good value for money.
Interaction: Rosetta Stone lessons are very interactive. The learner is continually engaged and challenged. Using their unique Dynamic Immersion method ensures that you learn a language as a child does - by interacting with object in the world around it.
Fun: At Live and Learn Languages we firmly believe that learning a new language should be fun and enjoyable. Rosetta Stone lessons are just that, meaning that you'll never have to drag yourself to de the lessons. On the contrary you'll look forward to them.

BYKI (Before You Know It) has proven popular with many language learners, as it's initial course is a free download, it covers many languages, and it's easy to use. Whereas we wouldn't recommend this as the only resource to use in learning a language, it is a very useful supplementary tool if you're a beginner to the language.
Beginners & Travellers: BYKI is a good way to get you started with the language by learning useful words and phrases. So if your reason for learning is a trip to a country where the language is spoken, BYKI is very useful. However if you want a more comprehensive course, we'd recommend Rosetta Stone (above).
Pronunciation: The BYKI "perfect recall" method allows you to fine tune your pronunciation by comparing your pronunciation through the microphone with that of a native speaker.
Rarer languages: BYKI cover many 'niche' languages such as Chechen for which there are little other options in terms of language learning software.
Your pocket: BYKI is FREE. However if you wish to you can pay to upgrade to their deluxe course which covers more material.
