Spanish Immersion

Immerse yourself in Spain or South America!

Home>Spanish>>Spanish Immersion

Surrounding yourself with words and sounds and music, every day, will be the very best way to learn this Latin language. Of course, the best way to immerse yourself in the language is by living and working in a Spanish speaking country. We are currently looking into different Spanish immersion courses that are available, and we'll soon be able to recommend one or two.

However, if something like that isn't a possibility for you right now, do your best to immerse yourself where you live, for free, using the following suggestions…

1. Use a dictionary to print words like “table”, "door", "window", "kettle", "bed", "chair", "mirror" etc and stick them onto those items around the house. Over time these words will automatically become part of your vocabulary, without even trying to memorize them! You could also in time join verbs to the nouns, like eat, open/close, wash, boil, sleep, sit, look, etc so as to associate them with the objects. Try it!

2. Listening to the radio abit each day and tune in your ears!

3. Keep up with the news each day - if you're new to the language try using a dictionary to figure out the main headline. If you do this every day, you'll quickly expand your vocab. If you're a bit more advanced, try reading an article each day, and figure out any words you don't know. Make sure it's an article on something that interests you i.e. if you're a sports fan, try reading an article in the soccer or basketball section.

4. Look up the weather each day! This site is great because it doesn’t just show the weather in pictures, it's like weather flashcards!

5. Keep yourself tuned into the media!

6. Use www.Google.es instead of Google in English… and/or set your search options so that the results include Spanish webpages OR use Google’s translation tools to translate English pages that you’re familiar with.

7. Listen to music and look for the lyrics to your favorite songs! For example here is a song called "Eres tú" and here are the lyrics...
